How many Ebooks are sold on Clickbank every year?

Few people do, because Clickbank is a Private company and they don't have to report figures like these. But I did some detective work, and found an obscure press release related to a "business person of the year" award given to the company's founder in 2007.

At the time, Clickbank was selling 25,000 ebooks a day, and raking in $300 Million in a year. That's an average price of around $32.88 per ebook. (I'm sure it's nearly double that by now.)

And, keep in mind that these figures are spread out over 12, 000 different authors selling their books.

Some of them make the lion's share of that money -- some as much as $5,000 or $10,000 a day while most sell one now and then.

And many more sell absolutely zero.

What's the Difference Between Wild Success and Total Failure?

So you've got to be wondering, what's the difference between the people selling nothing and those who are making a million dollars a year?

• It's not the topic (there are diet books, make-money books, and relationship booksat both extremes)

• It's not the price (some of the best selling books sell for about $75, and others sell for less than $20. Flops can be found for the exact same prices).

• And it's not the experience of the author (one of my personal consulting clients is raking in the dough as the #3 most popular ebook on Clickbank for his category, and this is his first ebook!)

The difference is that some ebooks are written with Big Bucks in mind, and others are written with absolute ignorance.

UH OH! Here's How Most People Write Ebooks

If people knew that the way they were planning on writing their ebook was going to

• require time away from their family, and

• make them struggle like they've got a second full-time job, and

The problem is that most people have no idea how to write an ebook. They THINK that step one is to start writing, but they couldn't be more wrong.

The 7 biggest mistakes new ebook authors make

A lot of us want to write an ebook about what we know about. Makes sense, right? We want to share the knowledge that we've gained over the years, and help people overcome the same problems that we've managed to overcome ourselves.

And we want to start writing NOW!

And we think that the world will beat a path to your door to buy from you.

Does that pretty much describe you and your ebook?

Okay, so then here are the 7 biggest (and most common) mistakes new ebook authors make.

1. You think of yourself as an expert, not a marketer.
   
   This is a tough one to handle.
   
   If you are an expert in your field, then you're locked into your topic. If you truly want to make money online, then you need to think of yourself as a marketer FIRST, and an expert SECOND.
   
   That doesn't mean you aren't going to write about the topic you love. It just means that you're going to write your book in a way that will make it sell.
   
   Some people may think this sacrifices their artistic integrity, or their purity of purpose. But I see it differently. I see it as the method for getting your very important message into the hands of as many people as possible...and earning you a profit in the process, so you can continue your good work.

2. You write your ebook first, and then try to figure out how to sell it later.
   
   I think almost every new ebook author does this...and it's ebook suicide. And MOST of the ebook questions I get on my blog, and mailed to me personally, sound pretty much like this:
   
   "I just finished my ebook. Now, how do I get people to buy it?"
   
   By then, it's too late.
   
   There are dozens of things you can do while you are creating your ebook that will get you customers the moment it's done and posted on line.
   
   Looking for customers at a time when you should be ringing the cash register is just a big mistake.

3. You Love Your Topic Too Much!
   
   There doesn't HAVE to be anything wrong with writing about a topic you love. the problem is that too many people are blinded by their topic. As a result, they don't think about the marketability of their ebook.
   
   And they never see the opportunity that lies within their topic, or a another use for their expertise in a different field.

4. Creating a Title for your Ebook that is Too Cute or Clever
   
   Your ebook's title needs to grab your customer's attention, and make it EXTREMELY clear to him or her that this is the answer I've been looking for!!!
   
   I attended a marketing seminar recently where a woman was on the "hotseat". She had written a book about Native American methods for disciplining children, and it was called "Keepers of our Children" or something like that.
   
   What's the problem with this title...
   
   NO ONE knows what it means, except for the author.
   
   Does that title make it clear to ANYONE what the book is about? Or why they should buy it? Could anyone see it on the shelf at a bookstore and KNOW they needed to buy it? Doubtful.
   
   No matter what the book is about, or how good the book actually is at solving the problems that its readers may have, it will never sell and never help anyone with a title like that.

5. You don't really understand your customer.
   
   We tend to think of our customers as one big, similar group of people, and when we do that, we overlook and ignore the details. But if you get the details wrong, you will overlook all of your marketing opportunities, and fail.
   
   Here's a brief example:
   
   You might think that all body builders want the same thing. Sure, some want a bigger chest, and others want big arms, too. But as it turns out, in the bodybuilding world, a lot of people (like me) want to lose weight and gain muscle.
   
   But did you know that there are just as many men who are looking to GAIN weight?
   
   Both markets are huge, and either one could make you a mint. But if you try to be all things to all people, you'll be nothing to everybody.
   
   If you get to know your customer better, your book will be better, because it will strike at the heart of his problem.

6. You think the most important part of your ebook is the ebook.
   
   The most important part of your ebook is not your ebook, it's your story. And your story is contained not only in your ebook, but your marketing as well.
   
   In fact, if you have no marketing, then you've got no sales.
   
   Did you know that pharmaceutical companies regularly spend more money on marketing than they do on research and product development?
   
   That's because they know that if they can't get their product into the hands of their customers with their marketing, their business is dead.
   
   And it's the same for you and your ebook business.

7. You believe that the value of your book is somehow related to the length of your book
   
   This one ought to be a relief to you.
   
   But as it turns out, the length of your book has nothing to do with it's true value. In other words, you don't have to keep struggling to write more stuff, just to get over the 100 or 200 page mark.
   
   In fact, you can write a 25 or 30 page ebook (or a shorter one) and still charge as much as you want for it.
   
   That's because the value of the book actually turns out to be set by the quality of the marketing you do for your book. I've got an ebook on my computer that cost $10, and another here in my office that cost $250. Both were on the same topic. Both about the same length. But the marketing of the $250 book made it worth $250!

There was a theme in all of those answers -- did you catch what it was?

It's that without marketing, there really is no ebook, and definitely no business.

So it should be clear now that the way to create a Big Bucks Ebook is to ...

Building your marketing into your ebook sounds like a hard thing to do. The ironic thing is that when you follow my method, writing your ebook is not at all what you thought it would be.
